I work with social practices and cultural forms.

The television commercial, the documentary, the karaoke performance, the art opening, the educational slideshow, the letter of recommendation – I take such forms, both with reverence and in the spirit of intervention, and try to make them speak for me even as I lay bare how they speak through me -- and everyone, by association.

In practice, this has taken the form of installations, performances, and films, or some combination thereof. No matter what I do, film – the cinema, the epitome of mediated experience – is always a touchstone, with some practices of the cinema being of particular importance.

I am always a storyteller, and a provider of experience. I don’t make things so much as I make things happen. Also, whether working with time-based media or social practice itself, there is a sense in which I am always editing, structuring and re-structuring.

And finally, I could never overlook performance as an integral part of my work – concerned as I am with the performing and re-performing of conventions.

Whether we call them conventions or practices or forms, these things circumscribe who we are. I think it’s important – urgent, even – that we not take the social practices in which we engage for granted, lest we take ourselves for granted.
